Your wedding day is likely to be one of the most important days of your life. Of course you want it to be the perfect day. All brides do – it’s only natural. Choosing the right wedding dress is crucial. If you make a bad decision and choose a dress that fails to flatter your body shape or vintage, it will cast a shadow on the day and potentially ruin it for you. So how can you ensure you pick the right wedding dress?
Look for Inspiration
There are a million and one places to look for inspiration before you go shopping for a wedding dress. There are also lots of dresses to choose from, including short wedding dresses and designer dresses. Magazines are a good place to start – specifically bridal magazines – but there are also plenty of inspirational websites you can spend a bit of time browsing through if you are stuck for ideas about the type of dress you want. Check out image websites such as Pinterest and Instagram for starters.
Have a Wedding Dress Wish List
Once you have a few ideas in mind, write a wish list of wedding dress options you think might be right for your big day. For example, you might want to look at plus size wedding dresses, or if the wedding is a low key affair, maybe a simple, straight dress is a better bet?
It is better to have some idea of the type of dress you are interested before you make an appointment at a bridal shop. Most shops restrict appointments to one hour, which isn’t long when you don’t have a clue about what you want. Narrowing down your dress options before you go will help you find the right dress in the allotted time.
Finding a wedding dress to suit your body shape is critical. Whatever body shape you are – curvy, lean and athletic, petite or plus-size – there will be a wedding dress to suit your figure. However, you do need to be honest about what body shape you are. Buying the dress of your dreams in a much smaller size and then vowing to fit into it within a month is unrealistic and bound to end in tears. If you are not sure what style will suit your figure, ask for advice – that’s what the assistants are there for.
Take a Friend
Buying a wedding dress is not something you should do alone. Always take along a friend or relative to help you make the right decision on the day. Choose someone who has your best interests at heart and who won’t be overly negative, especially if you lack confidence. After all, the last thing you need is a jealous friend telling you your preferred dress makes you look fat.
Buying a wedding dress is not something to squeeze in between a trip to the Pound Shop and picking up the kids from school. Make sure you have enough time to find the dress of your dreams, although if your wedding is a last minute affair for whatever reason, you probably shouldn’t dither too long!
